A little piece of home,
on Union Street.
Afroauthentic Foods is a family-run African supermarket in the heart of Torre, Torquay — built to serve the flavours, ingredients and community many of us grew up with.

It started with a shopping trip that never ended in what we came for.
In 2023, our founder was driving from Torquay to Bristol every fortnight — a 200-mile round trip for a bag of egusi, a bottle of palm oil and a proper cut of goat. Silly, and necessary. Torbay had a thriving African and Caribbean community, but nowhere to shop for the food that community actually ate.
So we opened a small shop on Union Street. One shelf became four. Four became a freezer aisle. Today, Afroauthentic Foods stocks over 380 authentic products from West, East and Central Africa — and delivers them across Torbay and the wider UK.
How we got here.
A single shelf
Started with 40 core products in a small unit on Union Street. Word travelled fast — customers were driving from Exeter within the first month.
The freezer arrives
Frozen goat, croaker fish, ice fish and a proper poultry line. Weekly restock from HCF Poultry established.
Expanded shopfront
Doubled our footprint at 240 Union Street. Full aisles for spices, flours, drinks and household goods.
Home delivery in Torbay
Launched WhatsApp-based delivery for the local community. Free on orders over £45.
Afroauthentic online
Full e-commerce launch. The whole shop, in your pocket, delivered UK-wide.
Three things we refuse to compromise on.
Authenticity
Every brand on our shelves is one you’d actually recognise from a market back home. No knock-offs, no “inspired by” — the real thing.
Fair prices
We’re a community shop. That means we don’t price our regulars out of the food they’ve cooked all their lives. Family sizes, honest margins.
People first
The shop is run by people who cook this food and eat it every day. Ask us anything — from how to pick a plantain to how to build a soup.
